The effect of heterozygous autosomal inversions on induced exchanges between the attached-X and Y chromosomes in Drosophila melanogaster females.

چکیده
INCE the original observation of STURTEVANT (1919) a large body of data has accumulated substantiating the contention that, in Drosophila melanogaster females, inversion heterozygosity in one part of the genome increases the frequency of recombination in the remainder of the genome. This effect has been demonstrated for spontaneous meiotic crossing over (see, for instance, SCHULTZ and REDFIELD 1951; RAMEL 1962; SUZUKI 1963), and for spontaneous somatic crossing over (BROWN and WELSHONS 1955; RONEN 1964). COOPER (1946) studied the effects of autosomal inversions on the frequency of spontaneous exchanges between attached-X and Y chromosomes and reported that heterologous structural heterozygosity had no effect on the rate of detachment of the attachedX. The purpose of this paper is to present experimental evidence of a significant increase of induced exchanges between the attached-X and Y chromosomes when heterozygous autosomal inversions are present in the genome.

Spermatogonial crossing over in Drosophila melanogaster and Drosophila ananassae.
FRIESEN (1936) induced crossing over in Drosophila males by X rays and found that most of the exchanges were in a preferred region, the complementary crossover classes were very unequal, and the percent recombination varied greatly from individual to individual. According to him, the data 'were sufficient to demonstrate the occurrence of spermatogonial crossing over. WHITTINGHILL (1937) found t...

LTHOUGH the properties of crossing-over have been investigated extenA sively in Drosophila melanogaster, the influence of nonhomologous chromosomes on crossing-over is a problem that warrants further exploration. Since STURTEVANT’S (1919) observation that a heterozygous inversion in the third chromosome increased crossing-over in chromosome 2, many investigators such as SCHULTZ and REDFIELD in ...
متن کاملAn analysis of regional constraints on exchange in Drosophila melanogaster using recombination-defective meiotic mutants.
The frequency of crossing over per unit of physical distance varies systematically along the chromosomes of Drosophila melanogaster. The regional distribution of crossovers in a series of X chromosomes of the same genetic constitution, but having different sequences, was compared in the presence and absence of normal genetically mediated regional constraints on exchange. Recombination was exami...

HE genetic analysis of kinetic activity in Drosophila melanogaster based T on the fate of first anaphase bridges derived from double crossing over within heterozygous inversions made it possible for centromeres to be characterized as weak or strong. The experimental basis for the distinction between these two types was described earlier (NOVITSKI 1952) and a more detailed description of the gen...
